A Basic Analysis of the Functions of Lift-and-Transfer Multi-Storage Parking Garages

As one of the most widely used mechanical parking systems, lift-and-transfer multi-story parking garages focus on efficient space utilization and convenient vehicle access. This type of garage dynamically allocates parking spaces across multiple levels through a combination of vertical lifting and horizontal movement of the loading platform. It is suitable for residential communities, commercial centers, and public parking lots. The following describes the basic structure, operational logic, and core functional modules.

Ⅰ. Basic Structure and Operating Principle

The main structure of a lift-and-transfer multi-story parking garage consists of a steel frame, loading platform, drive system, and control system. The frame is typically welded from high-strength steel to ensure overall stability. The loading platform is arranged in layers, with the lower level providing direct access, while the upper levels rely on lifting and transverse movement for access. Its operating principle is based on "vacant parking" logic. When parking a vehicle, the system first checks whether there are available spaces on the target level. If not, the vehicle loading platform on the lower level or in an adjacent parking space moves horizontally, freeing up a vertical channel for the loading platform to be raised or lowered. When retrieving a vehicle, the loading platform containing the target vehicle is lowered to the ground level or laterally adjusted to a passable position before being driven out.

II. Core Functional Module Analysis
1. Vertical Lift Function

Vertical lift is the key operation for parking and retrieving vehicles from upper-level parking spaces. A motor-driven wire rope or chain moves the loading platform up and down along guide rails. This function requires precise control of the level (typically within ±5mm) to ensure that the loading platform is flush with the ground or transition platform, preventing collisions during vehicle entry and exit. Furthermore, anti-fall devices (such as mechanical locks or electromagnetic brakes) are implemented during the lifting process to automatically lock the loading platform in the event of a power outage or abnormality, ensuring safety.

2. Horizontal Shift Function

The loading platforms on the lower level and above can be moved horizontally on horizontal tracks using motor-driven rollers to adjust the parking layout. The core of the lateral movement function lies in a path planning algorithm. The system calculates the optimal sequence for moving the loading platform based on the current occupancy status of each level, freeing up vertical access to the target parking space in the shortest possible time. For example, if a parking space on an upper level is needed and the space directly below it is occupied, the system will prioritize moving the loading platform below horizontally to the adjacent vacant space before initiating the lifting operation.

3. Intelligent Control and Safety Protection

Modern lifting and lateral movement garages generally integrate PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) or microcomputer control systems, supporting both manual and automatic operation. Users enter the license plate number or parking space number through the control panel, and the system automatically assigns the optimal parking space and guides the loading and retrieval process. Safety protection features include overrun limit switches (to prevent loading platforms from overshooting or undershooting), anti-overlap detection (to prevent multiple loading platforms from occupying the same horizontal track simultaneously), an emergency stop button (to immediately cut off power in an emergency), and vehicle size detection (using photoelectric sensors to detect whether a vehicle exceeds the loading platform range).

III. Extended Value of Basic Functions

Beyond basic parking and retrieval functions, lift-and-slide multi-story parking garages can also enhance the user experience through add-on modules. For example, garages equipped with license plate recognition systems enable unattended automatic parking. Connecting to the city's parking management platform provides real-time display of available spaces and supports reservations. Some high-end models also feature integrated charging ports to accommodate new energy vehicles.

In summary, lift-and-slide multi-story parking garages, by combining the basic functions of vertical lift and horizontal movement, effectively address the problem of insufficient flat parking spaces. Their reliability and flexibility make them a crucial tool for urban static traffic management. With technological advancements, the functionality of these garages will continue to expand towards intelligent and user-friendly features.
